Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Presence

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad without replacements.

He signed initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
